Cuffari, whose investigations have been critical of the border crisis and security failures that led to the first assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump as well as the federal response to Hurricane Helene, has faced calls to resign after a Wednesday report from the Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency (CIGIE) alleged that he “abused his power” during “retaliatory investigations” against former employees. Gaetz called this investigation’s timing “telling” and “gross,” saying that his removal “would look like a cover-up,” according to the letter obtained exclusively by the Daily Caller News Foundation.

“You have independent oversight over the nerve center of the D.C. swamp, and the knives are out for you,” Gaetz said in the letter. “I am very concerned that Vice President Harris and others who want to cover up the open border and the assassination attempts on former President Trump will be calling for your firing and privately leaning on President Biden to remove you.”

After the report was released, Democratic Reps. Jamie Raskin, who serves as ranking member for the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, and Bennie Thompson, who serves as ranking member for the House Committee on Homeland Security, called on Biden to remove Cuffari, who was appointed by Trump and confirmed in 2019.

“In the wake of the independent and nonpartisan CIGIE Integrity Committee’s report documenting IG Cuffari’s misconduct, we call on President Biden to remove him as inspector general of DHS,” Raskin and Thompson said in a joint press release. “CIGIE’s report confirms the findings of our own multi-year investigation, which is that DHS Inspector General Cuffari misled Congress during his confirmation to become an inspector general and, after becoming an inspector general, once again misled Congress and proceeded to blatantly abuse his powers and waste millions in taxpayer dollars.”

Gaetz pushed back in the letter and pointed out that both he and FBI Director Christopher Wray object to Cuffari’s removal.

“It would look like a cover-up on the part of President Biden and Vice President Harris,” Gaetz said in the letter. “Given two assassination attempts on former President Trump, your continued oversight responsibilities related to the Southern border crisis, and now the numerous whistleblowers coming forward about FEMA mismanagement of the Hurricane Helene response, removing you might be politically convenient for those in power, but Americans would see it as a dirty trick.”

“It is telling, and rather gross, that this report comes out right before the November election,” Gaetz said in the letter. “After all, your office has oversight over parts of the Department of Homeland Security that might be asleep at the wheel as our election technology is penetrated by foreign adversaries.”

Paxton asked U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Director Ur Jaddou to hand over data on roughly 454,300 Texas registered voters who have never had their citizenship verified, according to a letter submitted by Paxton’s office. The demand, Paxton says, is part of his effort to ensure compliance with federal and state election laws against non-citizen participation in elections.

“Although federal and state law prohibits non-citizens from voting, federal law paradoxically creates opportunities for non-citizens to illegally register to vote while prohibiting States from requiring voters to have proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections — a common sense measure to identify illegal registration,” Paxton wrote to Jaddou. “Under any circumstances, this federal prohibition against citizenship verification makes little sense, but it is especially troubling given the current scale of the illegal immigration crisis.”

“For these reasons, Texans are increasingly concerned about the possibility of non-citizen voting, and I have a responsibility to uphold the integrity of our elections,” the Republican attorney general continued.

As part of Paxton’s investigation into the extent to which non-citizens have unlawfully registered to vote or have already voted in Texas, the attorney general obtained the list of roughly 454,300 registered voters from the Texas Secretary of State’s office who purportedly have not had their citizenship verified.

“Although I have no doubt the vast majority of the voters on the list are citizens who are eligible to vote, I am equally certain that Texans have no way of knowing whether or not any of the voters on the list are noncitizens who are ineligible to vote,” Paxton said.

The attorney general explained how a recent Texas Secretary of State audit confirmed that there were more than 1,300 non-citizens registered to vote in four counties that were chosen at random.

Citizenship status is automatically verified when Texas residents use their driver’s license or other state-issued ID card to register to vote, Paxton explained. This verification is necessary, he said, because non-citizens lawfully living in the state cannot vote, but they can legally apply for and obtain a driver’s license or ID card.

The individuals on Paxton’s list allegedly did not use a driver’s license or another ID to register to vote, and their information could not be gathered by the Texas Department of Public Safety, resulting in their unverified status, Paxton said. The attorney general is giving USCIS until Oct. 17 to comply with his demands.

Paxton’s letter follows other legal efforts across the country to ensure voter integrity, specifically regarding the threat of non-citizen participation in elections. The Arizona Secretary of State was sued last week for allegedly refusing to hand over the names of 200,000 registered voters who had not provided proof of their citizenship.

USCIS did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Trump is slated to speak to voters in Butler, Pennsylvania at 5 p.m. this evening, with SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and family members of Corey Comperatore — the fireman who was killed in the July shooting — also expected to attend. The speaking engagement has sparked concern over the former president’s safety; notably, a dozen current and former Secret Service agents told NBC News that the USSS has reached “a breaking point” amid staffing shortages and an increased workload.

“The increasing demand placed on the agency during this dynamic threat environment has resulted in our people being pushed to the limit,” Anthony Guglielmi, The USSS’ chief spokesman, said in a statement shared with the Daily Caller News Foundation Saturday. “We recognize that this is not sustainable, and we cannot risk another mission failure.”

The USSS has struggled with staffing issues as attrition outpaced new hiring, with a net loss of 59 Special Agents and 60 Special Agents in fiscal years 2022 and 2023, respectively, according to employment data the USSS shared with the DCNF. However, the agency has seen a significant increase in hiring in fiscal year 2024, adding 186 Special Agents and 1,099 total employees — nearly double the total hired in the fiscal year prior.

Despite the recent increase in hiring, Trump’s return to Butler coincides with the USSS “redlining,” meaning agents are having to work excessive hours, according to two U.S. officials who spoke with NBC.

“The US Secret Service is killing their people, and worse they are supposed to have a zero-fail protective mission on zero rest/sleep,” a former agent reportedly told the outlet. “I love my agency but they are setting themselves up for another incident.”

The strain on Secret Service resources also comes despite the agency’s budget skyrocketing, with the USSS slated to receive an additional $231 million from Speaker Mike Johnson’s government funding bill. The agency’s budget has increased by nearly $1 billion since 2014, though only $200 million of that has gone to protective operations.

“I hate to say it, they are going to hit rock bottom fast,” a former Secret Service agent reportedly told NBC.

Tony West, Harris’ brother-in-law and chief legal officer at Uber, led a series of meetings in September at luxe New York City event venue Cipriani 42nd Street, convening with billionaire CEOs such as Jamie Dimon of JPMorgan and Brian Roberts of Comcast, the WSJ reported. Meanwhile, Harris has been touting her “New Way Forward” economic plan, which proposes raising the corporate tax rate to 28% in order to ensure “the wealthiest Americans pay their fair share in taxes,” and has even supported a wealth tax on Americans worth $100 million or more.

“I don’t begrudge West and the Harris campaign for trying to have business outreach going on,” Faiz Shakir, a longtime adviser to Independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, told the WSJ. “But you don’t simultaneously see an outreach to those wanting to unrig the economy.”

West listened to business magnates’ opinions on policy issues such as technology, healthcare and economics, with attendees telling the WSJ they see Harris’ brother-in-law as a member of her inner circle who can speak on her behalf, the WSJ reported.

Dimon has donated to both Republicans and Democrats, providing $3,300 donations this year to both Democratic Nevada Sen. Jacky Rosen and Republican Arkansas Rep. French Hill, according to Open Secrets.

Roberts has also supported candidates from both parties financially, giving a $10,000 donation to the Democratic Party of Pennsylvania in 2010 after dishing out a $2,500 donation and $10,000 donation to the Republican Federal Committee of Pennsylvania in 2004.

West has played a significant role in Harris’ campaign, serving among a team of top economic advisers responsible for briefing think-tank leaders and former administration officials on the Democratic nominee’s economic platform, according to the WSJ. He also praised Harris at the Democratic National Convention on Aug. 21, remarking, “she’ll fight for all of us, because friends, when Kamala fights, we win.”

Before West took leave from Uber to volunteer on the campaign, he was involved in a $200 million effort in 2020 to pass a California ballot initiative that exempted companies like Uber and Lyft from having to classify their drivers as employees, thus allowing them to provide less benefits, the WSJ reported. West’s role in the initiative reportedly became a point of contention within the International Brotherhood of Teamsters when the union had to decide who to endorse in the 2024 presidential election, with the Teamsters, who have historically supported Democrats, ultimately declining to endorse a candidate.

“That led to a conversation about who she might side with when it comes to gig and the tech industry, which is a concern for working people,” an unnamed source told the WSJ regarding the effect White’s role in the 2020 California ballot initiative had on the Teamster’s deliberation process.

The Harris campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Iran launched hundreds of missiles into Israeli territory — most, but not all, of which were intercepted — in retaliation for Israel’s attacks against Tehran and Hezbollah in recent weeks and months. With the war against Hamas in Gaza largely coming to a close, Israel’s primary focus is now on combating Iran and Hezbollah, two much larger adversaries that threaten to throw the already chaotic Middle East region further into turmoil, national security experts told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

“Hamas is a shadow of its former self. Israel is going to continue to try to eradicate them, but it’s sort of a guerilla campaign. Hamas is being starved and smoked out. I suspect that you’re going to see Hamas go underground somewhat — more figuratively than literally at this point,” former State Department official Gabriel Noronha told the DCNF.

The Iranian strike is one of the latest developments in the ongoing regional conflict, though it is undoubtedly not the last. Israel has yet to respond to the attack but, military spokesman Daniel Hagari promised on Tuesday there would be “consequences” for Iran.

“Iran made a big mistake – and it will pay for it,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin said during a security cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

It’s not clear what route of retaliation Israel may choose to take, although it reportedly had warned Tehran on Monday — ahead of the missile salvo — that it would go after Iranian nuclear and oil facilities if it were attacked. Former Israeli intelligence official Avi Melamed told the DCNF he didn’t anticipate Israel would strike nuclear or oil sites, but that other major infrastructure — such as military or logistics sites — would be targets.

“Non-kinetic” methods could also be employed by Israel against Iran, Melamed said.

“That’s my estimation for the features of the expected Israeli response,” Melamed told the DCNF, noting that the timing of such a response would likely be sooner than later.

U.S. military assets positioned in the region provided defense to Israel during the Iranian strikes on Tuesday. U.S. officials have thus far declined to comment on what Israel’s next move might be, although they have similarly warned of “consequences.”

It’s unlikely that the U.S. would participate in a joint attack against Iran, but officials have vowed that more defenses will be provided to Israel if need be, and Melamed told the DCNF that an Israeli response is at the very least likely being coordinated with U.S. officials.

Israel is also facing a challenge in Hezbollah, Iran’s largest and most capable terrorist proxy network. Hezbollah began firing at Israel over the Lebanon border last October, out of support for Hamas’ invasion of Israel at the time, which ended in the murder of approximately 1,200 people and lit the fuse for a broader regional war.

“It’s clear that Israel is determined to rid Lebanon of Hezbollah,” senior fellow at the Strauss Center and former Pentagon official Simone Ledeen told the DCNF. “Do the Israelis need to get every single one of those Hezbollah fighters? No, of course not. They need Hezbollah to lay down their arms and surrender… the Israelis [are] really focused on getting to that objective.”

The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has heated up rapidly in recent weeks. Israel has carried out sweeping airstrikes against Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon and remotely detonated thousands of the terrorist group’s personal communication devices in September, sending explosions sweeping throughout the country.

Israel killed Hezbollah’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, in an airstrike in Beirut on Friday, creating further chaos for the group and raising alarm in Iran. Now Israeli forces are conducting a series of ground raids over the border in southern Lebanon, in what could be the prelude to a larger ground invasion.

“From all accounts that I’m seeing, the next phase is, you have to launch a ground invasion and take out as many Hezbollah operatives as possible,” Noronha told the DCNF. “Hezbollah will bite back hard, and it’ll get pretty ugly, but it’s not entirely clear where this goes from there.”

As things stand, Israel is essentially in a multi-front conflict with Iran, Hezbollah, Hamas, and other Iranian-backed terror groups scattered throughout the Middle East. Arguably the least threatening actor right now is Hamas, which has been thoroughly weakened since last year. Israeli forces have killed nearly 18,000 Hamas fighters since last year, according to the most recent estimates, which is about half the manpower the group started with when it invaded Israel in late 2023.

Several Hamas leaders have also been killed or assassinated since last year. The group’s prime leader, Yahya Sinwar, has been in hiding from Israeli forces in tunnels underground Gaza, which Hamas often utilizes for operations. Many sections of those tunnels have been destroyed by Israeli forces, however.

“They’re going to be the resistance force for what they will label the Israeli occupation of Gaza, probably for a long time,” Noronha told the DCNF. “But it won’t be warfare. It’ll be an insurgency.”

Israeli forces have wrapped some of their operations in Gaza, although the prospects of a full ceasefire with Hamas anytime soon remain low. Though questions remain about Gaza — such as who will rebuild or govern over the region when the war ends — the conversation is shifting to Iran, Hezbollah and other Western adversaries, especially in light of recent developments, experts told the DCNF.

“You see the shift right now,” Melamed told the DCNF, pointing to Iran’s strike against Israel on Tuesday and the risk of an even bigger Israel-Iran standoff. “Those ramifications are much bigger than the ramifications of the story of Israel and Hamas. At the end of the day, they’re all part of the same story. But the significance of the ramifications of an Israel-Hezbollah collision, and an Israel-Iran collision are far bigger than they are in comparison to Hamas.”

As for the U.S. role in the current state of affairs, the Biden-Harris administration has been working for months in trying to secure a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, and more recently between Israel and Hezbollah; those efforts have largely failed. Biden-Harris officials have often urged Israel to refrain from military operations and instead sought diplomatic off-ramps to resolve the multiple conflicts, though the U.S. continues to provide defensive assets for Israel and has not spoken out against a possible response from Israel against Iran.

The Biden-Harris administration’s foreign policy in dealing with Iran and the Middle East more broadly has been criticized by some as misguided or incompetent. Iran has raked in hundreds of billions of dollars in recent years from oil revenues made under the eased sanctions of the Biden-Harris administration, and additional billions from sanctions waivers. Iran uses its funds to back various terror groups like Hezbollah and Hamas.

On Hezbollah, former Pentagon official Simone Ledeen told the DCNF that the Biden-Harris administration should provide its support behind Israel’s efforts to defeat the terrorist group, but didn’t have high hopes that would be the case.

“What should we do? We should be voicing our full-throated support for Israel and providing them everything that they asked for in order to achieve a total victory in this war, full stop,” Ledeen told the DCNF. “What will we do? Nothing, practically nothing.”

United States District Judge Tanya Chutkan of the District of Columbia released Smith’s brief, which sought to address the Supreme Court’s July 1 ruling regarding presidential immunity in the election interference case, Wednesday evening over the objection of Trump’s attorneys. McCarthy said that most judges would have expressed concerns over the effects the release of the brief would have on potential jurors.

“The point of this was to try to get this information, which has been hashed out again and again before the American people. None of this is new, but the idea was to get the evidence out in as spectacular a way as possible. And by Smith’s light, hopefully get Trump convicted in the run-up to the election in hopes of influencing the outcome of the election. Smith’s brief focused on conversations Trump had with then-Vice President Mike Pence, including a Dec. 21, 2020 lunch in which Pence reportedly urged Trump to view the results of the election as “an intermission.”

“I think he does have a point that the rules have been slanted against him and for example, all deference was given to President Biden and Hunter Biden to keep the Hunter Biden stuff under wraps in the run-up to the 2020 election,” McCarthy continued.

“This strike is about fairness. Foreign-owned shipping companies have made record profits and executive compensation has grown. The Longshoremen, who play a vital role transporting essential goods across America, deserve a fair share of these record profits,” Harris said.

Israel targeted Nasrallah in a significant airstrike against his bunker on Friday, marking the latest blow to an increasingly weakening Hezbollah, which has been attacking Israel since last year. Khamenei had reportedly warned Nasrallah that Israel was going to try to kill him and urged him to flee Lebanon in the days prior to his assassination, a senior Iranian official told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Iran had already been concerned for years that Mossad, an Israeli intelligence agency, had infiltrated Tehran’s ranks, the outlet reported. Following Nasrallah’s death, that concern has grown larger — and Iranian officials have become worried about Khamenei’s safety, officials and sources close to the matter told Reuters.

“The trust that held everything together has disappeared,” an Iranian official told Reuters.

“[Khamenei] no longer trusts anyone,” another source close to the Iranian regime told Reuters.

Authorities have opened investigations to see whether some Iranian officials or members of Iran’s military are compromised, another Iranian official told Reuters. The investigations are particularly centered around officials who travel or have family outside the country.

Authorities are reportedly suspicious of Iranian military members who have recently been in Lebanon, one of the officials told Reuters. One of the military members had recently been asking about Nasrallah’s location, raising eyebrows among other officials. That individual was arrested, along with several others, the official told Reuters.

Khamenei’s warning to Nasrallah — which was made through an Iranian military messenger who was with Nasrallah at the time of his death — followed a sweeping, targeted attack by Israel against Hezbollah, the official told Reuters. Thousands of Hezbollah operatives’ pagers and walkie-talkies randomly exploded in late September, which was likely an orchestrated remote detonation by Israel, although the country hasn’t claimed responsibility.

But Nasrallah — who often operated in bunkers underground in Lebanon — felt at the time that he was safe and trusted his security officials to protect him, even as Iranian officials relayed their concerns about his wellbeing, the official told Reuters. Khamenei made a second offer via his military messenger for Nasrallah to relocate to Iran, but Nasrallah expressed that he wanted to stay in Lebanon.

Following Nasrallah’s assassination and the devastating blows Hezbollah has recently suffered, the security situation with the terrorist group is now so fraught that they can’t even hold a public funeral for Nasrallah, according to four sources familiar with the matter who spoke to Reuters.

Israel is expected to retaliate against Iran following a sweeping missile attack launched by Tehran on Tuesday, which largely failed due to interceptions from Israeli and U.S. forces. During a rally on Sunday, Trump suggested that “one really violent day” of law enforcement would effectively end retail theft. Kirschner argued on his YouTube channel that Trump’s rhetoric makes him “dangerous” and that he should be imprisoned in light of his ongoing legal issues.

“I only wish Donald Trump’s incessantly violent rhetoric would provoke a response from the institutions of government, the prosecutors and the courts … Donald Trump is the single most dangerous person to the community, to the American people. And he’s a defendant on pre-trial release in multiple criminal cases,” Kirschner said. “And he’s a defendant pending sentencing on release in yet another criminal case.”

“The law provides that if somebody is on release in a felony case and they pose a danger to the community, they should be revoked on release and detained pending trial or pending sentencing,” he added. “But I’ve pretty much given up hope that the institutions of government will apply the law as it was intended to be applied, as it would be applied to you, me, or anybody else in the country. They refuse to apply it to Donald Trump.”

A Manhattan jury convicted Trump in May on 34 counts for falsifying business documents related to reimbursing his then-attorney for a nondisclosure agreement with porn star Stormy Daniels. The former president’s sentencing was scheduled for Sept. 18, but Judge Juan Merchan postponed the date “if necessary” to Nov. 26, according to his order on Sept. 6.

Former federal prosecutor Andrew Cherkasky said Merchan’s decision could indicate his intention to jail Trump after the November election.

“So I’m going to shift my focus because the election is coming up, and I don’t expect prosecutors or courts to do anything about the danger Donald Trump poses to our country and to her people. But maybe, just maybe, after he loses the election in a landslide — and he will — maybe the time will be right for the institutions of government, better late than never, to apply the rule of law to Donald Trump,” Kirschner said. “He will no longer be a candidate for office, no reason for prosecutors or courts to be afraid to act and apply the law without fear or favor equally to Donald Trump.”

“And maybe after he loses the election, we will see courts issue what are called show cause orders, directing Donald Trump show cause, why he shouldn’t be revoked on pre-trial release or revoked pending sentencing and detained in his criminal cases,” he continued. “That is certainly what should happen, should have happened long ago. And I hope we don’t have to wait for the second Donald Trump-inspired and incited insurrection. We’ve seen that movie before, and I don’t know how much more our nation can take.”
