“It’s a promising start.”
Syria’s newly appointed President Ahmed al-Sharaa expressed optimism about U.S. President Doanld Trump’s potential role in bringing about global stability, saying that the U.S. president could “play a big role in achieving global peace.”
During an appearance on the Leading podcast with hosts Rory Stewart and Alastair Campbell, Sharaa praised Trump’s leadership thus far regarding his approach to international conflict resolution. He said that “Trump has brought a positive message” and noted that his involvement could be instrumental in ending the war in Ukraine.
“He is focused on domestic policy [and] revitalising the US economy. He’s also interested in peacebuilding in the Middle East as it has caused quite a bit of instability over the last two decades. It’s a promising start,” he said.
Sharaa, who previously led the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), took control of Syria after ousting Bashar al-Assad’s government in December.
